10 Mexican-Owned Tequila Companies
It all started with a tweet I screenshotted and placed on Instagram. It read “if any of my friends bring that unseasoned 818 tequila to a function it’ll be on sight.” It was funny to me but I understand how people viewed it as aggressive. Friends reached out wondering what I had against Kendall Jenner, while George Clooney and Lebron have their own tequila companies. The thing is, they are not appropriating my culture in the process.
I decided to take this situation and educate myself with tequila companies owned by my very own people.

This small women-owned distillery is located in the beautiful Valle De Guadalupe of Jalisco, Mexico. It is 100% blue agave tequila distilled by Melly Barajas. Learn about their process here. (It’s quite amazing) The tequila is matured for around 9-10 years and is put into the ovens within 24 hours of being cut. Any left over agave is given to local farmers to use as cattle feed.
She describes her tequila as “Very vegetal, without the sweetness, oakiness, or vanilla that is often associated with a highland reposado. You will not find a rounder finish in the tequila world. A perfect tequila for sipping with a beer on the side, no need for lime or ice.”
Fun Fact: Their bottles are made from recycled Mexican glass and she hires primarily women to work for her company!
“If not for women, there’d be no tequila.” Co Founder and CEO Bertha Gonzáles Nieves used her 10 year experience at José Cuervo to open Casa Dragones in 2008. Casa Dragones describes themselves as being in the business of taste, not volume. Each bottle is hand-signed and numbered to show their commitment to quality.

Satryna Tequila was founded by Nitzan Marrun is made using steamed blue Weber agave. This company celebrates Dia De Los Muertos with a beautifully designed limited edition bottle.

10. Clase Azul
Founded in 1977 by Arturo Lomeli, this tequila is now available in over 20 countries. Clase Azul is made by local community members in Mexico and is made from 100% pure agave.
