Job Searching Tips
Let’s talk about job searching. (ahhhh I know I am scared too!) I have some tips and tricks to help make the job search a bit less stressful.
1. Edit your Resume
This may be a no brainer but take a moment to read over your resume and edit it. As you start reviewing job descriptions, tailor your skills on your resume to match the job you are applying for.
Ask for help, send your resume to a friend and have them read it over for errors.
2. Job Searching Platforms (LinkedIn & Indeed)
In my opinion, the most trustworthy platforms for finding a job is LinkedIn and Indeed.
Let’s start off with LinkedIn, make an account and add a professional profile photo.
Write a quick and to the point message in the About section
Add in your work history and a description of your role in the Experience section
Whether you are still studying or a college graduate list your school/major under Education
If you have any certifications or volunteer work you would like to add LinkedIn allows you to add sections specifically for that
Under Accomplishments you may add in important courses you took in school, and the languages that you speak
Next up, under Skills & Endorsements add any skills you have and your LinkedIn connections may endorse you!
Quick tip:
Ensure your Open to Work is turned on! Looks like this:
Using the Job searching tab on LinkedIn can be extremely helpful. Simply search your desired job title and you can filter by date the job was posted, experience level, job type, location, distance etc.
You can even schedule to receive daily or weekly emails with job updates for the job titles you are searching for!
Next up, Indeed!
Make a profile on Indeed, similar rundown to LinkedIn.
You can add your personal information, and upload your resume for recruiters to see. List skills you have, education history, certifications/licenses and take/complete assessments to show employers what you are good at!
Scroll back up to the top and next to Resume, you’ll see About Me. Go ahead and click on that! Add your Contact Information, if you are Ready to Work you can turn on this feature and let recruiters know you are available to start immediately. You can also add information to What Kind of job are you looking for and Tell us about yourself to help indeed filter out jobs for you!
Just like LinkedIn, you can schedule daily or weekly emails that are tailored just for you!
To search for a job simply type in what you’re looking for! Example:
You can filter out the results by Date Posted, Remote, Miles, Salary Estimate, Job Type, Location etc.
Don’t forget to check your notifications and messages on the top right corner!
3. Glassdoor
When applying to jobs use Glassdoor to help you understand the company, its culture, and employee happiness. It’s a good tool to avoid applying to toxic companies or organizations that do not value you.
You can filter reviews by location which might be helpful! (One location might be doing better than the other.) Glassdoor gives employees or prospective employees to give a review on the company, interviews, benefits and photos!
Example:
4. Follow Up
Congrats! You submitted an application! If possible, try to follow up with the company or organization you are applying to!
5. Patience
Be patient with yourself and the applications you submit. We are in the middle of a pandemic and finding a job may take more time.
Be persistent and continue applying! You got this! It’ll take some time and dedication but you got this!
